It’s no secret winter can be cold and dark. As a result, you'll likely be using your lights and heaters more during the winter, straining your car’s battery.
This means it’s important to make regular checks if you haven’t used your vehicle for a while, your battery may be running low and in need of recharging. In some instances, it may be completely dead and in need of a replacement. Batteries can be more expensive to replace after a breakdown, so be prepared and shop around for good value.

Your tyres play a key role in steering and braking, so it’s important they’re always in good condition, particularly when roads are slippery. You’ll need to make sure they have the correct tread depth and pressure, which you should check every two weeks if possible. Cold air can also flatten them slightly overnight until they warm up again, so keep this in mind when you’re having them checked.

Frost can damage your car in a few ways if it gets into your car, including affecting the engine, windshield and braking system. Using antifreeze can help protect your car’s system from the frost.

Follow our tips on how to use antifreeze to protect your car from the cold:

●      Step 1: Mix 50/50 water and antifreeze to achieve the right ratio for all weather.

●      Step 2: Find the clear plastic tank under your car’s bonnet. This is your car’s water coolant reservoir.

●      Step 3: Gradually pour the antifreeze into the tank, making sure you fill it between minimum and maximum markers. If the level gets too low, it can cause the engine to overheat and lead to further damage.

Check your lights are clean and are in working order. The last place you want to be is on a dark road and unable to see so don’t forget to check your fog lights and full beam headlight. You should also make sure your hazard lights are in working condition, as you’ll need these if you break down.

If your windscreen wipers are squeaking, this can mean they're damaged and need replacing. Make sure your windscreen and wipers are clean and in working order. Keeping your screen clear will help prevent the glare of the low winter sun.

Don’t forget to top up your screen wash and check that you have the correct ratio for winter, which is 5 parts screen wash and 1 part water.

Before hitting the road, make sure you’re prepared for even the worst-case scenarios. It’s worth keeping the following items in your car as they could come in handy if you break down:

  • Torch
  • Blanket
  • Screen wash
  • Scraper
  • De-icer
  • Shovel
  • Supplies
  • In-car charger

Also make sure your phone is charged before you set out on a journey in case you need to call for breakdown help.

Breakdown cover is important, especially during the winter months, so make sure to check you’re covered on the roads.

We offer five types of breakdown cover, from Roadside Assist to UK & European Assist, depending on your needs. Have a look at our breakdown cover options to make you get the right policy for you.
