If your vehicle lets you down we'll be there for you. Here's some guidance about what to do in the event of a breakdown.

If possible try to pull over to the hard shoulder or as far left or as away from the road as possible. Switch on your hazard lights and, if it's dark or the light is bad, keep your side lights on.

If you can't get your vehicle clear of the road only leave your vehicle if you can do so safely. If you cannot safely exit the vehicle and decide to stay in it keep your seat belt on at all times. If you can safely leave your vehicle leave by the passenger door and keep well back from the road on a verge or on the other side of the barrier if there is one. Keep a clear view of the oncoming traffic and don't stand in front of your vehicle. Make a note of your location and the surrounding area and call our 24 hour breakdown line on 0330 678 7111 or 01484 435 806 from your mobile, a pay phone or a motorway emergency phone when it is safe to do so. (for Text Phone dial 18001 first).

If you're driving in Europe remember to check out the country you are travelling to before you get there. Driving legislation and restrictions can differ widely between European countries and it's best to be prepared. For example if you break down on a French motorway or A road, you should contact the French police by calling from an orange emergency phone box, or dialling 112 from your mobile phone. The French police will then recover your vehicle off the motorway and charge you for the service. We will reimburse you for these charges on your return to the UK (you will need to send us the receipt as per the policy documents). Once you've been recovered off the motorway, you should then call us for assistance.

For European assistance call us on +44 1484 435806 (for Text Phone dial +44 151 494 1260).

Lines open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Calls will be recorded.

You can also head over to our broken down page to find out what you need to do if you have broken down and need help.

Your breakdown cover excess is the amount you've agreed to pay if your breakdown provider comes out to you. You'll be able to find your breakdown cover excess amount in your policy documents.

Remember, if you require any services that aren't included in your level of cover, you may also need to pay for these.

Personal cover for breakdown is an optional extra, so you can choose to add this when you set up your breakdown policy. This extra level of cover is great for people who travel in lots of different cars - like carpooling for work, for example.

By choosing personal cover, both you and your spouse/partner are protected as passengers or drivers in any privately owned vehicle in the UK. In the unfortunate event of a breakdown, our Britannia Rescue team will be there to make things right and get you where you need to go.

Remember, you can't use personal cover while you are outside the UK!

Certain size and weight limits apply but, generally, we cover any motorised vehicle requiring motor insurance to be driven on public roads e.g. cars, motorbikes, motorcaravans, motorhomes and vans.

We don't cover vehicles used for hire and reward.

Yes, anyone driving the nominated vehicle will be covered for breakdown as long as they are insured to drive it and have your permission to drive the vehicle. To be covered in any other vehicle they'll need separate breakdown cover for that vehicle.

If you want to cover you and your spouse/partner in any other privately owned vehicle while in the UK then you can add personal cover to your policy.

No, if you're travelling abroad, you don't need to tell us in advance - unless you haven't got UK & European Assist breakdown cover and you'd like to add it.
