General driving tips
Be one step ahead to reduce the chance of your car breaking down, and have a safer drive along the way.
- make sure your headlights and indicator lights are clean and work properly. You should also give your car regular checks and servicing
- have a few emergency essentials in your car like a blanket, a torch, water, antifreeze and some cash
- let someone know where you're going, who you're going with and roughly what time you expect to arrive
- plan your route and take a map or sat nav with you so you won't have to rely on strangers for help or directions
- take your mobile phone with you especially if you're driving alone. Make sure it's charged up and has enough credit on it. But don't use a handheld phone while you're driving as it's dangerous and illegal
- have your Britannia Rescue emergency breakdown card with you or have our breakdown phone number stored in your mobile phone
- be aware of your fuel gauge and make sure you have enough fuel for your journey
- avoid taking shortcuts along minor routes to save time unless you're familiar with the roads
- keep your doors locked and windows shut especially when you stop at traffic lights
- never pick up hitchhikers along your route for any reason. If you see someone in distress, call the emergency services
