Britannia Rescue - History

Britannia Rescue has been providing breakdown assistance since 1983. Originally owned by csma (Civil Service Motoring Association). Britannia Rescue was acquired on May 17 2007 by Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society Limited, which is the UK's largest Friendly Society.

The Society does not have any shareholders and, as a mutual organisation, exists wholly for the benefit of its members and customers. Together with its subsidiary companies, the Society is one of the top insurance and financial services business in the United Kingdom.

Since 1983 Britannia Rescue has grown year on year and our membership now extends to over half a million vehicles. A large proportion of our business comes through affinity partnerships, which consist of trade union groups and professional bodies, where Britannia Rescue is the exclusive road rescue provider.

In 2002 we extended our service to enable us to offer breakdown assistance to larger organisations including insurance companies. This unique service is based on Britannia Rescue providing 24hr UK call centre support by control room staff based in Huddersfield, handling requests for roadside assistance in the UK, Republic of Ireland and Europe. This includes dedicated phone lines, management of costs and agent invoice processing.

Roadside assistance within the UK and Republic of Ireland is provided by a network of around 400 nationwide COBRA agents (Confederation of Britannia Rescue Agents). The network consists of over 3,000 roadside technicians who are carefully selected for their technical expertise, location and speed of response.

We pride ourselves on providing excellent service; in fact, our members give our service an overall satisfaction rate of over 98% and an average response time of around 40 minutes. This was complemented by being named a 'Best Buy' three times in a row by the UK's leading consumer testing magazine.
